Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

As a Senior Avionics Quality Engineer, you will act as the technical quality subject matter expert for all avionics and electronic systems, including embedded hardware and software, harnessing, and control systems. This role straddles internal and external quality domains, supporting the full product lifecycle—from design and development to supplier management and final system integration. You will collaborate closely with design, test, and production teams to uphold the highest standards of reliability, compliance, and workmanship for mission-critical electronic hardware.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the quality lead and technical SME for all avionics-related systems including PCBAs, harnesses, connectors, sensors, and embedded control hardware.
  • Develop and manage inspection criteria, acceptance test plans (ATP), and quality control documentation tailored to avionics components.
  • Partner with electrical, systems, and manufacturing engineering to review designs, lead FMEAs, and define process controls for electronic systems.
  • Perform internal audits and lead root cause analysis and corrective actions specific to avionics hardware and software nonconformances.
  • Conduct receiving inspection, source inspection, and MRB activities related to electronics and avionics assemblies.
  • Lead supplier qualification, audits, and surveillance for COTS vendors, PCB fabrication and assembly houses, and harness suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards including AS9100, IPC-A-610/620, and J-STD-001. Depending on the application domain, familiarity with standards such as DO-254, DO-178C, NASA-STD-8739 series, MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-1540, and MIL-STD-810 may be required.
  • Support environmental and functional testing (ESS, HALT/HASS, EMI/EMC) and ensure test traceability and configuration control.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of quality processes related to avionics manufacturing, test, and integration.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in quality engineering with a focus on avionics, electronics, or embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of IPC-A-610/620, J-STD-001, and aerospace electronics quality standards.
  • Experience with AS9100 quality systems and internal auditing.
  • Familiarity with electronics manufacturing processes and inspection techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in IPC or J-STD workmanship standards.
  • Experience with DO-254 and DO-178C compliance.
  • Prior experience leading supplier quality for avionics components.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Altium, Siemens NX, or equivalent tools
  • Hands-on experience supporting environmental test and integration of electronics.
