The future of aerospace and defense starts here.

Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.

We are seeking a Mechatronic Engineer to help drive the design, implementation, and maintenance of custom automation tools and integrating 3rd party instruments/devices across Ursa Major’s propulsion production manufacturing facility. You will be highly collaborative with Manufacturing, Test, and Quality Engineering, Safety, and product owners.

The role will focus on retrofitting and developing new production equipment infrastructure. Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and operator interface design will be key, from component selection through to validation. You will implement solutions that enable robust, efficient, and safe propulsion production with a focus on operator experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Gain deep understanding of functional, mechanical, and test requirements of propulsion subassemblies/components to deliver industry-leading production equipment
  • Operate as the primary mechanical and instrumentation stakeholder throughout conceptualization, specification, design, build, deployment and validation of automated production equipment, integrated into Ursa Major’s digital manufacturing environment
  • Participate in equipment development with consideration of product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits
  • Design safety-first systems handling fluids including kerosene, water, peroxide, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen with pressures up to 15,000 psi, as well as cryogenics
  • Be hands-on during the build process, working alongside engineers and technicians
  • Provide support to build operations by designing assembly fixtures in CAD
  • Generate documentation including P&ID, CAD drawings, assembly and work instructions for operation and maintenance

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with other functions and departments
  • Demonstrated ability to balance requirements of multiple stakeholders and deliver projects on time
  • Experience building high pressure fluid systems and industrial electrical panels
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for long periods, working on ladders, kneeling, crouching, working in tight spaces, lifting objects up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Experience:

  • Demonstrated first-principals approach to instrumentation and process equipment
